Raag Soohee, Shabad 75 - Before Anything, There Was the One

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਬ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਸੀਓ ਤਬ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਵਨ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
jab kachh na see-o tab ki-aa kartaa kavan karam kar aa-i-aa.
When nothing existed, what deeds were being done? And what karma caused anyone to be born at all?
ਅਪਨਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
apnaa khayl aap kar daykhai thaakur rachan rachaa-i-aa. ||1||
The Lord Himself set His play in motion, and He Himself beholds it. He created the Creation. ||1||

In plain words

Think all the way back - before there was anything at all. No deeds had been done, no reason anyone had earned to be here.

So how did any of us come to be? The One simply set the whole game in motion, and watches it unfold. Everything is that One's play.

You did not earn your way here; you are part of the One's unfolding play.
The deeper layer

Before anything existed, there was only the One, and the One started everything as a play.

Jab kachh na see-o — when nothing existed at all. Then the verse asks a clever question. If nothing existed, what deeds could anyone have done? What karam, what past actions, could have earned anyone a place here?

The answer is that no one earned it. Being here is not a prize for good behavior. It flows from the One's own act of making. Apnaa khayl aap kar daykhai — the One set up this khayl, this play or game, and watches it unfold. Rachan rachaa-i-aa — the One made the whole creation.

Think of a kid who builds a whole world out of blocks, just for the joy of it. None of the little block people had to earn their place. They are there because the builder loved making them.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change anything to know you did not have to earn being here?
