Verse 2 of 5

Raag Soohee, Shabad 75 - Nothing Happens by Me Alone

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
mayray raam raa-ay mujh tay kachhoo na ho-ee.
O my Sovereign Lord, I cannot do anything at all by myself.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aapay kartaa aap karaa-ay sarab nirantar so-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He Himself is the Creator, He Himself is the Cause. He is pervading deep within all. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

On my own, all by myself, I cannot really make anything happen.

The One is the doer and the reason things get done, woven right through the middle of everything and everyone.

On my own I do nothing; the One acts through everything.
The deeper layer

On my own I can't make anything happen; the One works through everything.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mayray raam raa-ay mujh tay kachhoo na ho-ee — O my Sovereign One, nothing happens by me alone.

Aapay kartaa aap karaa-ay — the One is the doer, and also the One who makes the doing happen. Sarab nirantar so-ee — that One is inside everything, with no gaps. Nirantar means unbroken, all the way through.

Think of a soccer team that scores a goal. The striker kicks it in, but the pass, the coaching, and even the grass all played a part. This verse gently loosens the "I did it all by myself" feeling. The credit belongs to the One working through everyone.

A Question to Sit With

When have you noticed you could not do something all on your own?
