Raag Soohee, Shabad 75 - Grace That Does Not Keep Score

ਗਣਤੀ ਗਣੀ ਨ ਛੂਟੈ ਕਤਹੂ ਕਾਚੀ ਦੇਹ ਇਆਣੀ ॥
gantee ganee na chhootai kathoo kaachee dayh i-aanee.
If my account were to be judged, I would never be saved. My body is transitory and ignorant.
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥੨॥
kirpaa karahu parabh karnaihaaray tayree bakhas niraalee. ||2||
Take pity upon me, O Creator Lord God; Your Forgiving Grace is singular and unique. ||2||

In plain words

If everything I had ever done were added up and graded, I would come up short - I know I am still learning, still small.

So I do not ask to be judged. I ask for kindness, because Your kindness is like nothing else: it does not keep score.

I do not ask to be graded; I lean on a kindness that does not keep score.
The deeper layer

If I were graded only on my record, I'd fall short, so I ask for the One's grace instead.

Gantee ganee na chhootai kathoo — if everything were counted up by strict account, I would never be set free. Kaachee dayh i-aanee — this body is kaachee, unripe, still forming, and still learning. That is an honest look at being small, not a claim of being worthless.

So the prayer turns from a scorecard to grace. Kirpaa karahu prabh karnaihaaray — Creator, please be kind to me. Tayree bakhas niraalee — Your bakhas, Your forgiving grace, is niraalee, one of a kind.

Think of a coach who doesn't just look at the scoreboard, but sees a young player still growing. Grace is like that. It looks past the tally to the person.

A Question to Sit With

How would you treat a friend who came up short - grade them, or be kind?
