Raag Soohee, Shabad 78 - Keeping the Sweet Word in My Heart

ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
charan Dhoorh tayray jan kee hovaa tayray darsan ka-o bal jaa-ee.
May I become the dust of the feet of Your humble servants. I am a sacrifice to the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.
amrit bachan ridai ur Dhaaree ta-o kirpaa tay sang paa-ee. ||2||
I enshrine Your Ambrosial Word within my heart. By Your Grace, I have found the Company of the Holy. ||2||

In plain words

Let me take the lowest, most humble place among those who love You - just to see You would be worth everything.

I keep Your sweet, life-giving Word tucked inside my heart, and it was kindness, not effort, that brought me into good company.

I keep the sweet Word in my heart, and even the good company came as a gift.
The deeper layer

The singer asks to be humble, and treasures the One's sweet Word.

Charan Dhoorh tayray jan kee hovaa — let me become the dust of the feet of Your people. It is a way of saying: let me be humble. Tayray darsan ka-o bal jaa-ee — just to see You, I would give everything.

Amrit bachan ridai ur Dhaaree — I keep Your amrit Word in my heart. Amrit means life-giving nectar. Think of a kind note from someone you love, folded up and kept in your pocket. You take it out whenever you need it.

Ta-o kirpaa tay sang paa-ee — by Your kindness, I found good company. Sang means being with good, loving people. Even that came as a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What sweet words do you keep tucked away in your heart?
