What Scale Could Ever Weigh You?

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Soohee, First Mehl:
ਕਉਣ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਕਵਣੁ ਤੁਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਵਣੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਬੁਲਾਵਾ ॥
ka-un taraajee kavan tulaa tayraa kavan saraaf bulaavaa.
What scale, what weights, and what assayer shall I call for You, Lord?
ਕਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇਵਾ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੧॥
ka-un guroo kai peh deekhi-aa layvaa kai peh mul karaavaa. ||1||
From what guru should I receive instruction? By whom should I have Your value appraised? ||1||

In plain words

What scale could I ever find big enough to weigh You? What weights, what expert could measure Your worth?

From which teacher would I even learn how, and who could ever put a price on You? You are beyond all of it.

Some things are too big and too precious to be measured.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak asks a pile of questions to show that no one can measure the One.

Ka-un taraajee kavan tulaa — "What taraajee, what scale? What tulaa, what weights?" Kavan saraaf bulaavaa — "What saraaf should I call?" A saraaf was an expert who tested gold and said what it was worth.

Ka-un guroo kai peh deekhi-aa layvaa — "Which teacher could even teach me how?" Kai peh mul karaavaa — "Who could set Your price?"

Think of trying to weigh the ocean on a kitchen scale. The questions pile up until the answer is plain: the One is beyond all measuring.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life too precious to put a price on?
