Be Merciful to me, O Divine, Compassionate Guru, that I may constantly sing the Glorious Praises of my Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You already know everything inside me - every thought before I say it, every feeling before I name it.

So be kind to me, gentle guide, and let me sing Your praises every single day.

The One already knows what is inside me before I say a word.
The deeper layer

The One already knows everything inside me, so I only ask for kindness and a song.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Too parabh antarjaamee — You, God, are the antarjaamee, the one who knows what is inside. The One reads the heart directly. So nothing needs explaining. It is like a best friend who can tell you are sad before you say a word.

Kar kirpaa gurdayv da-i-aalaa — be kind to me, gentle Guru. Gurdayv means the Guru as a divine, loving guide. Gun gaavaa nit su-aamee — so that I may sing my Master's praises every day.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to be fully known by someone who is kind?
