Raag Soohee, Shabad 80 - You Set the Course, Not Me

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
soohee mehlaa 5.
Soohee, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ॥
sagal ti-aag gur sarnee aa-i-aa raakho raakhanhaaray.
Renouncing everything, I have come to the Guru's Sanctuary; save me, O my Savior Lord!
ਜਿਤੁ ਤੂ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਹਮ ਲਾਗਹ ਕਿਆ ਏਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
jit too laaveh tit ham laagah ki-aa ayhi jant vichaaray. ||1||
Whatever You link me to, to that I am linked; what can this poor creature do? ||1||

In plain words

I have set everything else down and come to the shelter of the teaching. Keep me safe - that is what You do.

Wherever You point me, that is where I go; a small being like me does not set its own course. And that is a relief, not a loss.

I do not have to set my own course; the One does, and that is a relief.
The deeper layer

I have put everything down and come to the Guru for shelter. Now I trust the One to lead.

Sagal ti-aag gur sarnee aa-i-aa — leaving everything, I came to the Guru's saran, the Guru's shelter. Raakho raakhanhaaray — keep me safe, You who keep us safe.

Jit too laaveh tit ham laagah — wherever You set me, there I go. This is trust in hukam, the One's will, the way life flows. Ki-aa ayhi jant vichaaray — what can this small creature do on its own? That can sound helpless. But the feeling here is relief. Think of a long car trip at night. A child in the back seat can fall asleep, because someone they trust is driving.

A Question to Sit With

Is it ever a relief to let someone else set the course?
