Raag Soohee, Shabad 79 - The Teaching That Saved Me

I know nothing about wisdom, meditation and good deeds; I know nothing about Your excellence.
sabh tay vadaa satgur naanak jin kal raakhee mayree. ||4||10||57||
Guru Nanak is the greatest of all; He saved my honor in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||4||10||57||

In plain words

I do not come with a pile of wisdom or perfect practice or good deeds. Honestly, I cannot even grasp how wonderful You are.

But the teaching is the greatest thing of all. In these hard times, it lifted me up and kept my honour safe when I could not do it myself.

I came empty-handed, and the teaching lifted me anyway.
The deeper layer

I came with nothing, and the teaching saved me anyway.

Gi-aan Dhi-aan kichh karam na jaanaa — I know nothing of gi-aan (wisdom), Dhi-aan (meditation), or karam (good deeds and rituals). Saar na jaanaa tayree — I cannot even grasp how great You are. This is honest. The singer comes with empty hands.

Sabh tay vadaa satgur naanak — the True Guru, Nanak, is the greatest of all. Jin kal raakhee mayree — who kept my honor safe in Kal, the dark age, these hard times. Think of forgetting your homework, and a teacher helping you anyway, just because they care. Rescue comes from kindness, not from what we have done.

A Question to Sit With

When has help come even though you had nothing to offer in return?
