Raag Soohee, Shabad 79 - Taming the Five Troublemakers
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those who keep the Name close taste the sweet fruit of peace, turned toward You all day long.
And safe in Your shelter, leaning on You, they finally get the upper hand over the five inner troublemakers. Anger, greed, grasping, and the rest used to run the show.
Keeping the Name close brings peace, and it helps us tame the troublemakers inside.
Naam Dhi-aa-in sukh fal paa-in — those who keep the Name in mind get the fruit of peace. Aath pahar — all day long, they stay turned toward You.
Panch dusat means the five troublemakers inside us. They are kaam (wanting things too much), anger, greed, clinging, and pride. Lai saaDheh — they tame them. But they do not do it by fighting harder. They do it from the One's shelter, leaning on the One. Think of a puppy that will not calm down. Shouting makes it wilder. Sitting quietly beside it, with a steady hand, settles it.
Which inner troublemaker would you most like to master?
