Raag Soohee, Shabad 80 - A Life That Bears Fruit

ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਜਗ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਉ ਜਾਪੇ ॥
safal janam tis kaa jag bheetar saaDhsang naa-o jaapay.
How fruitful is the life of that being in this world, who chants the Name in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੩॥
sagal manorath tis kay pooran jis da-i-aa karay parabh aapay. ||3||
All desires are fulfilled, for the one who is blessed with God's Kindness and Mercy. ||3||

In plain words

A life really counts for something when it is spent keeping the Name alive in good company.

And every deep longing gets filled, for the one the One reaches with kindness.

A life spent keeping the Name in good company bears real fruit.
The deeper layer

A life spent with the Name, among good people, is a life that bears fruit.

Safal janam tis kaa jag bheetar — that person's life in this world is fruitful. Safal means bearing fruit, like a tree heavy with apples. SaaDhsang naa-o jaapay — they repeat the Name in the saaDhsang, the company of good, holy people.

Sagal manorath tis kay pooran — all the heart's wishes come true for them. Manorath means a deep longing. Jis da-i-aa karay parabh aapay — for the one God Himself is kind to. So the filling-up comes as a gift of grace, like rain on a garden.

A Question to Sit With
