In plain words

O gentle One, kind to the small and the struggling, I have come into Your shelter.

The one gift I ask for is Your Name - to carry it in me; and let me take the humblest, most grateful place among those who love You.

The one gift worth asking for is the Name itself, to carry within.
The deeper layer

The singer asks for one gift, the Name, and takes the humblest place.

Deen da-i-aal kirpaal parabh su-aamee — God, the Master, is kind to the deen, the small and the struggling. Tayree saran da-i-aalaa — I have come into Your shelter, kind One.

Kar kirpaa apnaa naam deejai — please be kind and give me Your Name. The request is simple. It is the Name itself, the living presence of the One. Naanak saaDh ravaalaa — Nanak is the dust of the feet of the holy. Humility is the closing note of this whole group of Guru Arjan's shabads. Think of a quiet kid in class who helps everyone and never asks for thanks. A heart like that has room for the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you would want to carry with you everywhere, no matter what?
