None of the Things the World Counts

ਨਾ ਮੈ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਬੰਕੇ ਨੈਣਾ ॥
naa mai roop na bankay nainaa.
I have no beauty, no enticing eyes.
ਨਾ ਕੁਲ ਢੰਗੁ ਨ ਮੀਠੇ ਬੈਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naa kul dhang na meethay bainaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I do not have a noble family, good manners or a sweet voice. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I do not have the looks people admire, or lovely eyes.

I do not have a famous family, or perfect manners, or a sweet way of speaking.

The things the world uses to rank me are not what love is looking for.
The deeper layer

This is the heart of the shabad: I have none of the things the world counts, and that is okay.

This line is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the whole shabad. Naa mai roop na bankay nainaa means "I have no beauty and no lovely eyes." Naa kul dhang na meethay bainaa means "no noble family, no fine manners, no sweet voice."

One by one, she sets down everything people use to rank each other: looks, family name, manners, a smooth way of talking. It is like taking off every badge and medal before walking into a room. What is left is just the person. And that turns out to be enough.

A Question to Sit With

What do people get judged on that has nothing to do with who they really are?
