Adorned With Calm, Not Ornaments

ਸਹਜਿ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
sahj seegaar kaaman kar aavai.
The soul-bride adorns herself with peace and poise.
ਤਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਜਾ ਕੰਤੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
taa sohagan jaa kantai bhaavai. ||2||
But she is a happy soul-bride, only if her Husband Lord is pleased with her. ||2||

In plain words

She gets ready by putting on calm and peace, like jewels.

But she is truly happy only when the One she loves is glad of her.

A calm, settled heart is the finest thing I can wear.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: the best way to get ready for the One is with a calm heart, not fancy things.

Sahj seegaar means "dressed up in sahaj." Sahaj is a natural, easy calm, like still water. That calm is her jewelry.

Taa sohagan jaa kantai bhaavai means she is a happy bride only when the Beloved is pleased with her. Think of getting ready for a friend's birthday. What your friend really remembers is not your outfit but that you were kind and fun to be with. Quiet peace inside takes the place of showing off outside.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel truly ready inside, not just on the outside?
