Not by Being Clever

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
surat mat naahee chaturaa-ee.
I have no understanding, intellect or cleverness.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥
kar kirpaa parabh laavhu paa-ee. ||4||
Have Mercy upon me, God, and attach me to Your Feet. ||4||

In plain words

I have no deep understanding, no sharp mind, no clever tricks.

So I simply ask: be kind to me, God, and let me rest at Your feet.

Closeness comes through asking and grace, not through being clever.
The deeper layer

Guru Nanak is saying: I can't get close to the One by being smart, so I ask for kindness.

Surat mat naahee chaturaa-ee means "I have no understanding, no sharp mind, no cleverness." Kar kirpaa parabh laavhu paa-ee means "be kind, God, and keep me at Your feet." Kirpaa is grace, kindness given freely.

Think of a small child who can't open a jar. She doesn't give a speech. She just holds it up to her mom. Once she stops leaning on her own cleverness, all she has to do is ask. And grace is always ready to answer.

A Question to Sit With

When has trying to be clever gotten in the way of something simple?
