Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 82
Verse 5 of 9

Always Wanting, Never Full

ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮੰਗੈ ਸੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥
nit nit khusee-aa man karay nit nit mangai sukh jee-o.
Constantly, continually, the mortal seeks pleasures. Constantly, continually, he begs for peace.
ਕਰਤਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥
kartaa chit na aavee fir fir lageh dukh jee-o.
But he does not think of the Creator Lord, and so he is overtaken by pain, again and again.
ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਕੈਸੀ ਭੁਖ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥
sukh dukh daataa man vasai tit tan kaisee bhukh jee-o. ||4||
But one, within whose mind the Giver of pleasure and pain dwells - how can his body feel any need? ||4||

In plain words

I can spend a whole day chasing one good feeling after another. I keep begging for a peace that never quite arrives.

I do not keep the Creator in mind, so the aches come back again and again.

But when I keep in mind the One who gives both the easy days and the hard ones, a strange fullness settles in. There is nothing left to grab for.

Chasing one good feeling after another never fills you; remembrance does.
The deeper layer

Chasing good feelings all day never fills us up.

Nit nit khusee-aa man karay nit nit mangai sukh: day after day the mind chases fun, and day after day it begs for comfort. Kartaa chit na aavee: but the Creator never comes to mind, so the aches keep coming back.

It is like scrolling for one more fun video. You never reach the end, and you never feel full.

Sukh dukh daataa man vasai: when the Giver of both happy and hard times lives in your mind, tit tan kaisee bhukh, how can there be any hunger left? Feeling full comes from remembering the One, not from getting more.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you kept wanting more of, but it never felt like enough?
