Iron in the Fire

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Soohee, First Mehl:
ਜਿਉ ਆਰਣਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਇ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਈਐ ॥
ji-o aaran lohaa paa-ay bhann gharhaa-ee-ai.
As iron is melted in the forge and re-shaped,
ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
ti-o saakat jonee paa-ay bhavai bhavaa-ee-ai. ||1||
so is the godless materialist reincarnated, and forced to wander aimlessly. ||1||

In plain words

Iron that is not yet shaped goes back in the fire. It is hammered again and again, until it finally takes a good form.

A heart that keeps turning away from the flow of life is a little like that. It keeps circling back to the same hard lessons until it softens and learns.

A heart that keeps turning away circles back to the same lesson until it softens.
The deeper layer

This one means a heart that turns away from the One keeps going round, like iron sent back to the fire.

ji-o aaran lohaa paa-ay bhann gharhaa-ee-ai — just as iron is put in the forge, melted and shaped again. A forge is a blacksmith's very hot fire.

ti-o saakat jonee paa-ay bhavai bhavaa-ee-ai — in the same way, the saakat is sent round and round. A saakat is someone turned away from the One.

The fire here is teaching, not punishment. The blacksmith heats the iron again and again because he wants a good tool at the end. The way out is to soften and learn.

A Question to Sit With

What is a lesson life kept bringing back to you until you finally learned it?
