ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਸੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੩॥
mai deejai naam nivaas har gun gaavsee. ||8||1||3||
bless me with a home in Your Name, Lord, that I may sing Your Glorious Praises. ||8||1||3||

In plain words

If I could ask for only one thing, it would be small and simple: let me make my home inside Your Name.

Give me a place to live in that closeness, and I will fill it with song. That is the whole of what I want.

One prayer is enough: let me live inside Your Name, and I will sing.
The deeper layer

This one closes the shabad with a single, humble prayer.

Ik naanak kee ardaas means "Nanak has one ardaas," one prayer. Jay tuDh bhaavsee adds, "if it pleases You."

Mai deejai naam nivaas means "give me a nivaas, a home, in the Name." Har gun gaavsee means "and I will sing the One's goodness."

Think of a birthday wish list with only one line on it. The whole shabad narrows down to this one small, complete request: a home in the Name, where songs of praise can flow.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for only one thing, what would it be?
