The Thief Named Pride

ਦਿਹੁ ਦੀਵੀ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰੁ ਘਬੁ ਮੁਹਾਈਐ ॥
dihu deevee anDh ghor ghab muhaa-ee-ai.
In the pitch darkness of broad daylight, their wealth is being plundered.
ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਸੈ ਘਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥੫॥
garab musai ghar chor kis roo-aa-ee-ai. ||5||
Pride is looting their homes like a thief; where can they file their complaint? ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Sometimes, even in broad daylight, something quietly robs a person of what matters most — and they never notice it happening.

That quiet thief is often pride — the puffed-up sense of being better and separate. It slips off with your peace, and there is no one to report it to but yourself.

Pride is a quiet thief that robs your peace in broad daylight.
The deeper layer

This one means pride is a quiet thief that steals our peace.

dihu deevee anDh ghor — pitch darkness in broad daylight. Something is being stolen even while the sun is shining.

garab musai ghar chor — pride robs the house like a thief. Garab means pride, the puffed-up feeling of being better than others.

Think of an app running in the background of a phone. It drains the battery, and you never see it happen. You only notice that the power is gone. Pride is like that. The verse asks, who can we complain to? The answer is inside us. The fix is to wake up and notice.

A Question to Sit With

Has pride ever quietly cost you something before you noticed?
