The House That Stays Awake

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਗਾਈਐ ॥
gurmukh chor na laag har naam jagaa-ee-ai.
The thief does not break into the home of the Gurmukh; he is awake in the Name of the Lord.
ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਆਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੀਪਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
sabad nivaaree aag jot deepaa-ee-ai. ||6||
The Word of the Shabad puts out the fire of desire; God's Light illuminates and enlightens. ||6||

In plain words

But there is a kind of heart no thief can sneak into — one that stays awake, keeping the One in mind.

When the sacred word cools the fire of endless wanting, a steady light comes on inside, and the house is safe because someone is home and awake.

No thief can rob a heart that stays awake, keeping the One in mind.
The deeper layer

This one means a heart that stays awake to the One is safe from that thief.

gurmukh chor na laag har naam jagaa-ee-ai — the thief cannot get into the home of the gurmukh, the one turned toward the Guru. That person stays awake in the Name.

sabad nivaaree aag jot deepaa-ee-ai — the sabad, the sacred Word, puts out the fire of wanting more and more. Then the inner light shines.

Think of a house at night with the lights on and someone at home. A thief walks right past it. Staying awake to the One is like a lock on the door.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay awake to what matters instead of drifting?
