The Jewel You Already Carry

ਲਾਲੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥
laal ratan har naam gur surat bujhaa-ee-ai.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a jewel, a ruby; the Guru has taught me the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ਜੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
sadaa rahai nihkaam jay gurmat paa-ee-ai. ||7||
One who follows the Guru's Teachings remains forever free of desire. ||7||

In plain words

The Name — the living presence of the One — is like a jewel of enormous worth. The teaching is what helps me finally see it.

And once I really see it, the endless grabbing quiets down.

Once you see the real jewel, you stop clutching at trinkets.
The deeper layer

This one means the Name is a jewel, and the teaching helps us see it.

laal ratan har naam gur surat bujhaa-ee-ai — the Name of the One is a laal, a ruby, and a ratan, a jewel. The Guru helps us understand it.

sadaa rahai nihkaam jay gurmat paa-ee-ai — whoever takes in the gurmat, the Guru's teaching, stays nihkaam. That means free of grabbing.

Think of a child holding a real gold medal. The plastic toys on the shelf stop seeming so important. When you see the true treasure, the wanting for smaller things quiets down.

A Question to Sit With

What is something truly valuable that you already have?
