In plain words

All through the day and all through the night, I keep the Name gently in my mind, the way you keep someone you love in your thoughts.

And I ask, softly: bring me home to You, if that is the way of things. I would like nothing more.

Keep the One close day and night, and ask, gently, to be brought home.
The deeper layer

This one means keeping the Name in mind day and night, and asking to be brought close.

raat dihai har naa-o man vasaa-ee-ai — night and day, let the Name live in your mind. It is like keeping someone you love in your thoughts. You do not have to try hard. They are just there.

naanak mayl milaa-ay jay tuDh bhaa-ee-ai — Nanak asks the One: bring me close, if it pleases You. It is a humble prayer. He asks, and he leaves the answer to the One.

The shabad ends here, softly, on that prayer.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you keep in your thoughts even when they are not around?
