When the 'I' Goes Quiet

ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤੁਧ ਹੀ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥
ha-o naahee too hoveh tuDh hee saaji-aa.
When there is no ego, there You are; You fashioned all of this.

aapay thaap uthaap sabad nivaaji-aa. ||5||
You Yourself establish and disestablish; through the Word of Your Shabad, You elevate and exalt. ||5||

In plain words

When my "I" goes quiet, there You are. You shaped all of this.

You set things up and You take them down. Through Your Word, You lift us high.

When the loud me goes quiet, I notice You were here the whole time.
The deeper layer

This verse says that when the loud "me" goes quiet, the One is right there.

Ha-o naahee too hoveh: when ha-o, the "I," is gone, You are there. Ha-o is the ego, the part of us that shouts "me, me, me." Think of a room where everyone is talking at once. When the noise stops, you finally hear the soft music that was playing the whole time.

Aapay thaap uthaap sabad nivaaji-aa: You Yourself set things up and take them down, and through the Sabad, the Word, You lift us high.

Letting the ego go quiet is not losing anything. It is finding what was always there.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt more at peace once you stopped making it all about you?
