The Great Wonder

ਦੇਹੀ ਭਸਮ ਰੁਲਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਕਹ ਗਇਆ ॥
dayhee bhasam rulaa-ay na jaapee kah ga-i-aa.
When the body rolls in the dust, it is not known where the soul has gone.
ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੬॥
aapay rahi-aa samaa-ay so vismaad bha-i-aa. ||6||
He Himself is permeating and pervading; this is wonderful and amazing! ||6||

In plain words

There is so much about life and its endings that I cannot explain or track — where things go, how it all works.

And instead of scaring me, that mystery fills me with wonder, because the same One is woven through absolutely everything. What a marvel that is.

The mystery of it all is not a fright but a wonder — the One is woven through everything.
The deeper layer

This verse looks at the biggest mystery of all, and finds wonder in it instead of fear.

Dayhee bhasam rulaa-ay na jaapee kah ga-i-aa: the body goes back to dust, and no one can tell where the soul has gone. The verse says this honestly. There is a lot about life and its endings that no one can explain.

Aapay rahi-aa samaa-ay so vismaad bha-i-aa: the One is woven through everything, and this is vismaad. Vismaad means a deep, happy wonder, the feeling of standing under a sky full of stars. The same One is in all of it.

So the mystery is not something to be afraid of. It becomes awe.

A Question to Sit With

What is something mysterious that fills you with wonder instead of worry?
