Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Everything is True; Truth alone is everywhere. Only a few who turn to the Guru know it.
Birth and death happen by the One's will. The one who turns to the Guru comes to know their own self.
They remember the Name and please the true Guru. They receive whatever they wish for.
Nanak says: the one who lets go of the puffed-up self from inside has everything.
Let go of the puffed-up "me," and you don't lose anything. You gain everything.
Sabho sach sach sach vartai — everything is Truth, only Truth, everywhere. Only a few who face the Guru really know it.
Jaman marnaa hukmo vartai — birth and death happen by the Hukam, the One's will, the steady flow of how things happen. Nothing in it is random or forgotten. The one who faces the Guru comes to understand their own self. They remember the Naam, the Name, and that pleases the true Guru. Whatever they long for, they receive.
Naanak tis daa sabh kichh hovai, je vichahu aap gavaa-ay — Nanak says, the one who lets go of aap, the puffed-up self, from inside, has everything.
That is the surprise at the end of the song. Think of a hand that lets go of one small pebble so it can be filled with a whole handful of gold. Losing the small self is the great gain.
When has putting yourself last actually left you with more, not less?
