Don't Build on What Fades

raag soohee mehlaa 3 ghar 10
Raag Soohee, Third Mehl, Tenth House:
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਵੰਞਸੀ ॥
dunee-aa na saalaahi jo mar vanjsee.
Do not praise the world; it shall simply pass away.
ਲੋਕਾ ਨ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਖਾਕੁ ਥੀਈ ॥੧॥
lokaa na saalaahi jo mar khaak thee-ee. ||1||
Do not praise other people; they shall die and turn to dust. ||1||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

When I look for something to admire and lean on, I notice that the world itself is always changing and moving on — nothing here stays exactly as it is.

So I don't hang my whole heart on things that pass, or measure my worth by people who, like me, are just passing through. I look for something that lasts.

Don't hang your worth on what is always slipping away.
The deeper layer

dunee-aa na saalaahi jo mar vanjsee — do not praise the world, which passes away; lokaa na saalaahi jo mar khaak thee-ee — do not build your worth on people who will return to dust. The opening ||1|| verse; not a condemnation of the world but a redirection of praise toward what endures.

A Question to Sit With

What lasting thing do you most want to build your life on?
