The Hunger Nothing Fills

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਰਚੰਨਿ ॥
gur kaa sabad visaari-aa doojai bhaa-ay rachann.
Those who forget the Word of the Guru's Shabad are engrossed in the love of duality.
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਫਿਰੰਨਿ ॥੪॥
tisnaa bhukh na utrai an-din jalat firann. ||4||
Their hunger and thirst never leave them, and night and day, they wander around burning. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I let the Word slip out of mind and pour myself only into wanting more and more, a strange hunger sets in — I get something, and still I want.

That thirst never quite quiets down. It's the ache of looking for wholeness in things that can't hold it.

Wanting more and more is a thirst that never quiets on its own.
The deeper layer

doojai bhaa-ay rachann — absorbed in duality, the love of the "other"; tisnaa bhukh na utrai — the hunger and thirst never lift. Restlessness is framed as the natural result of seeking completeness where it cannot be found, not as a punishment.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gotten something you wanted and still felt like you wanted more?
