Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 90
Verse 18 of 33

Servant of the Servants

ਸੇਵਕ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਵਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਨਉ ਬੁਲਾਈ ॥੧੭॥
sayvak kaa ho-ay sayvak vartaa kar kar bin-o bulaa-ee. ||17||
I long to be the servant of Your servants; I call upon You reverently in prayer. ||17||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I would gladly be a servant of Your servants.

Again and again, I call on You in humble prayer.

There's real dignity in gladly serving those who serve.
The deeper layer

sayvak kaa ho-ay sayvak vartaa, kar kar bin-o bulaa-ee — to be the servant of Your servants, calling on You in prayer again and again. Humility as honest dignity: the low, loving place is chosen gladly, with no shame in it.

A Question to Sit With

Who quietly helps others that you could help in return?
