Verse 27 of 33

Words That Ring True

gurmukh boleh so thaa-ay paa-ay manmukh kichh thaa-ay na paa-ee. ||26||
That which Gurmukh speaks is certified and approved. Whatever the self-willed manmukh says is not accepted. ||26||

In plain words

When someone speaks from a heart turned toward the teaching, their words carry weight — they land, they're real.

When words come only from the puffed-up, me-first self, they somehow don't hold up. It's the heart behind the words that gives them their truth.

It's the heart behind the words that makes them ring true.
The deeper layer

gurmukh boleh so thaa-ay paa-ay, manmukh kichh thaa-ay na paa-ee — the gurmukh's words are accepted; the manmukh's do not hold. The truth of speech comes from the orientation of the heart behind it.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell when someone really means what they say?
