A Thirst That Nothing Fills

ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਿਆਪੇ ॥
moh magan meh rahi-aa bi-aapay.
He remains entangled in the intoxication of worldly love.
ਅਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਬਹੂ ਨਹੀ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੇ ॥੨॥
at tarisnaa kabhoo nahee Dharaapay. ||2||
His excessive thirst is never quenched. ||2||

In plain words

When I chase after having more and more, it is like drinking salt water — the more I get, the thirstier I feel. Nothing ever quite seems like enough.

That endless thirst is a signal, not a failure. It is my heart telling me it is looking for something the next new thing can never give.

Endless wanting is a signal that my heart is looking for something bigger.
The deeper layer

Wanting more and more is a thirst that never gets filled.

Moh magan meh rahi-aa bi-aapay — he stays lost and dazed in moh. Moh means clinging to people and things. At tarisnaa kabhoo nahee Dharaapay — his huge tarisnaa, his craving, is never satisfied.

Think of drinking salt water when you are thirsty. Each sip makes you thirstier. Craving works the same way. It grows on whatever you feed it. That is why the next new thing never feels like enough.

A Question to Sit With

When have you finally gotten the thing you wanted and still not felt full?
