Doors Bolted from the Inside

ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਜਰੇ ਕਿਵਾਰਾ ॥
bharmat bi-aapat jaray kivaaraa.
Afflicted by doubt, the shutters are shut tight;
ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
jaan na paa-ee-ai parabh darbaaraa. ||4||
he cannot go to God's Court. ||4||

In plain words

When I am full of doubt, it is like I have bolted all my own doors and windows shut from the inside — and then wondered why no light gets in.

The One I am looking for is not locked away somewhere. I am the one who shut the doors. And doors that I closed, I can also open.

The doors I closed with doubt, I can also open.
The deeper layer

Doubt shuts the doors. The good news is that we shut them from the inside.

Bharmat bi-aapat jaray kivaaraa — filled with bharam, doubt and confusion, the kivaaraa, the shutters, are shut tight. Jaan na paa-ee-ai parabh darbaaraa — he cannot go to God's darbaar, God's court.

Look closely at where the lock is. It is on our side of the door. Think of a kid who slams the bedroom door after a hard day, then feels lonely inside. Nobody locked them in. The same hand that closed the door can open it again. That is a hopeful thing to know.

A Question to Sit With

When has doubt made you shut a door you did not really need to shut?
