Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I am pulled around by hope for what might happen and fear of what might go wrong, I wander through my own life like a stranger who cannot find home.

Home was never far. It is the tug-of-war between hope and fear that keeps me from noticing I am already standing at the door.

The tug-of-war between hope and fear hides the home I am already near.
The deeper layer

Hope and fear pull us around, until we feel lost in our own home.

Aasaa andaysaa banDh paraanaa — a person is tied up by aasaa, hope, and andaysaa, worry. Hope says, "Maybe it will be great!" Worry says, "Maybe it will go wrong!" Back and forth, all day.

Mahal na paavai firat bigaanaa — he cannot find the mahal, the palace of the Beloved's presence. So he wanders like a bigaanaa, a stranger. And that palace is really home. Think of being so busy looking at your phone that you walk right past your own front door. Home was right there.

A Question to Sit With

When has worrying about the future kept you from noticing the good right in front of you?
