Sikhism·Raag Soohee·Shabad 94
Verse 8 of 9

Keep Company with the Good-Hearted

ਸਾਚੁ ਨੇਹੁ ਤਿਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਆਪਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
saach nayhu tin pareetamaa jin man vuthaa aap jee-o.
They alone bear true love for their God, within whose minds He Himself dwells.
ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਤਿਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸੇ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਪਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
gun saajhee tin sang basay aath pahar parabh jaap jee-o.
So dwell only with those who share their virtues; chant and meditate on God, twenty-four hours a day.
ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੈ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਜੀਉ ॥੭॥
rang ratay parmaysrai binsay sagal santaap jee-o. ||7||
They are attuned to the Love of the Transcendent Lord; all their sorrows and afflictions are dispelled. ||7||

In plain words

The ones who truly love are the ones the One has made a home inside.

So I want to keep company with people like that — hearts pointed the same good way — because near them, remembering feels constant, and the old aches quietly lift.

Near people whose hearts point the good way, the old aches quietly lift.
The deeper layer

Stay close to good-hearted people, because their love for the One helps your own love stay alive.

Saach nayhu tin preetamaa jin man vuthaa aap — true love, saach nayhu, belongs to those in whose minds the One lives.

Gun saajhee tin sang basay — so live near those who saajhee, share, the same gun, good qualities. Aath pahar prabh jaap — and remember the One through all aath pahar, the eight watches of the day and night, all the time.

Think of a campfire. One log alone goes out quickly, but logs together keep burning. Good company keeps remembering alive.

Rang ratay parmaysrai binsay sagal santaap — dyed in the love of the One, all santaap, pain and trouble, fades away.

A Question to Sit With

How do the people around you change what you spend your time thinking about?
