Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I let go of trying to look big and simply bowed low. Then the One met me, easily and naturally, with sahaj, the natural ease you feel when you stop fighting.

Nanak says: what was always meant for me arrived, and the wise ones I leaned on helped it happen.

Humility opened the door that all my effort could not.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan ends gently: when I bowed low, the One met me, easily and naturally.

Ho-ay nimaanee dheh pa-ee means "becoming humble, I bowed down." Nimaanee means humble, not trying to look big. Mili-aa sahj subhaa-ay means "He met me with sahaj," natural ease, with no struggle.

Poorab likhi-aa paa-i-aa means "I received what was meant for me from long ago." Naanak sant sahaa-ay means this came with the help of the sant, the loving and wise ones. Think of trying to force a stuck door, then gently turning the handle, and it swings open. Letting go and good company complete the meeting.

A Question to Sit With

When has letting go of trying so hard actually helped things fall into place?
