Give Me to the One Who Lasts

O father, give me in marriage to the Lord; I am pleased with Him as my Husband. I belong to Him.
rav rahi-aa jug chaar taribhavan banee jis kee bal raam jee-o.
He is pervading throughout the four ages, and the Word of His Bani permeates the three worlds.
taribhavan kant ravai sohagan avganvantee dooray.
The Husband Lord of the three worlds ravishes and enjoys His virtuous brides, but He keeps the ungraceful and unvirtuous ones far away.
jaisee aasaa taisee mansaa poor rahi-aa bharpooray.
As are our hopes, so are our minds' desires, which the All-pervading Lord brings to fulfillment.
har kee naar so sarab suhaagan raaNd na mailai vaysay.
The bride of the Lord is forever happy and virtuous; she shall never be a widow, and she shall never have to wear dirty clothes.
naanak mai var saachaa bhaavai jug jug pareetam taisay. ||2||
O Nanak, I love my True Husband Lord; my Beloved is the same, age after age. ||2||

In plain words

I have one wish: join me to the One who lasts — the Beloved I actually love. Not something that fades, but the One woven through every age, whose word runs through all the worlds.

This Beloved stays close to every heart that turns toward Him with love. As our hopes are, so our lives take shape, and the One who fills everything brings them to be.

A heart joined to the One is never left alone and never cast aside — never dressed in sorrow. That Beloved is the same, steady and true, age after age. That is the One I love.

Give your heart to what lasts, and you will never be left empty.
The deeper layer

baabaa mai var deh — O father, give me to the Lord. The word var means both bridegroom and, really, the deepest belonging. The old line raand na mailai vaysay literally says such a bride is never a widow in dirty clothes — imagery of social shame we deliberately soften to its true meaning: a heart joined to the One is never abandoned, never left in sorrow. jaisee aasaa taisee mansaa — as your hope, so your longing, so your becoming: what you reach for shapes you. This pauri is the hopeful answer to the withered feeling just before it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you want that will still matter to you years from now, not just today?
