Raag Sorath
Commentary

Raag Sorath, Chau-Padas, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Bow, and let the help in; when the heart is settled, enough arrives without chasing.

The Arc

Pauri 0: bowing to the teaching, one finds the One arranging all affairs and keeping one's honor whole. Rahau (Pauri 1): the One becomes the helper of those who love Him, bringing every hope to pass with nothing lacking; the Maker had a pool of sweet water made, and good things follow along without being chased. Pauri 2: remembering the kind One, the whole world grows gentle; praise to the Maker of a perfect world. Pauri 3: You are the great Master, and every blessing is Yours; holding the One, every good comes.

Key Vocabulary

  • gur pooraa namaskaaray: bowing to the perfect teaching
  • oonee baat na kaa-ee: nothing at all is lacking
  • pichhai lag chalee maa-i-aa: worldly good follows behind
  • jin pooree banat banaa-ee: who made a perfect design
  • ih punn padaarath tayraa: these blessings are Yours

Themes and Cross-Connections

Pichhai lag chalee maa-i-aa reframes worldly plenty: not chased but arriving on its own behind a rooted heart. Bowing (namaskaar) is presented as trust that lets help in, not as weakness -- and gratitude ('these blessings are Yours') replaces ownership.
