Verse 3 of 3

Speaking Only What the One Gives to Say

ਬੋਲੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ॥
bolay saahib kai bhaanai.
I speak according to the Will of my Lord and Master.
ਦਾਸੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
daas banee barahm vakhaanai.
God's slave chants the Word of His Bani.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
naanak parabh sukh-daa-ee.
O Nanak, God is the Giver of peace.
ਜਿਨਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥੨॥੨੦॥੮੪॥
jin pooree banat banaa-ee. ||2||20||84||
He has created the perfect creation. ||2||20||84||

In plain words

I say only what flows from the One's own will.

A humble heart speaks the Word, and the One, the Giver of peace, has made a perfect creation.

The truest words are the ones that flow through you, not the ones you push out.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan speaks only what the One gives him to say.

Bolay saahib kai bhaanai — I speak by my Master's will. Bhaanaa means the One's will, what the One wants. Daas banee barahm vakhaanai — the servant speaks out the Word of God.

Think of a messenger carrying a letter from someone he loves. He does not change the words. He is happy just to deliver them. The Guru's words come from the One in that way.

Naanak prabh sukh-daa-ee — God is the Giver of peace. Jin pooree banat banaa-ee — the One made a perfect creation. Everything has been put together just right.

A Question to Sit With

When have your best words felt like they came through you, almost on their own?
