Never Walking Alone

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾਲਿ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਮੇਰੈ ॥
naal naraa-in mayrai.
The Lord is always with me.

The Messenger of Death does not approach me.
ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖੈ ॥
kanth laa-ay parabh raakhai.
God holds me close in His embrace, and protects me.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਖੈ ॥੧॥
satgur kee sach saakhai. ||1||
True are the Teachings of the True Guru. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is always right beside me, closer than my own shadow, so fear cannot get near.

Held close and safe, I trust the teaching completely — it has proven true.

You are never walking alone.
The deeper layer

naal naaraain mayrai — the Lord is always with me; kanth laa-ay raakhai — held in a close embrace and protected; satgur kee sach saakhai — the teaching is proven true. The line about the messenger of death is rendered simply as fear not coming near.

A Question to Sit With

When do you most feel that you are not alone?
