Which Path, Which Name

ਕਉਨੁ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਰਈ ॥
ka-un karam bidi-aa kaho kaisee Dharam ka-un fun kar-ee.
Which actions, what sort of knowledge, and what religion - what Dharma should one practice?
ਕਉਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰ ਕਉ ਤਰਈ ॥੧॥
ka-un naam gur jaa kai simrai bhav saagar ka-o tar-ee. ||1||
What Name of the Guru should one remember in meditation, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean? ||1||

In plain words

What should I do, what should I learn, how should I live?

And which Name should I hold in my heart to carry me across life's widest waters?

It's good to ask honestly how best to live.
The deeper layer

This one is the seeker's honest list of questions. Ka-un karam bidi-aa kaho kaisee — which actions, and what kind of learning? Dharam ka-un fun kar-ee — and which way of living should I follow? Dharam here means a way of living rightly.

Then comes the biggest question: which Name of the Guru should I remember? Bhav saagar ka-o tar-ee — so that I can cross the ocean of life. The world is pictured as a wide, rough sea. It is like standing at the start of a long trip with a map full of roads, and asking, "Which one takes me home?"

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to you to live a good life?
