Verse 4 of 4

Faithful by Nature — Steady My Wandering Feet

ਰਹਿਓ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਅਉਧ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
rahi-o achayt na chayti-o gobind birthaa a-oDh siraanee.
He remains thoughtless, not thinking of the Lord of the Universe; his life is uselessly passing away.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਉ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਾਨੀ ॥੩॥੧੦॥
kaho naanak har birad pachhaana-o bhoolay sadaa paraanee. ||3||10||
Says Nanak, O Lord, please, confirm your innate nature; this mortal is continually making mistakes. ||3||10||

In plain words

It is so easy to drift along without ever turning my thoughts toward the One, letting the days go by.

So here is my honest prayer: I stumble again and again, I know I do, but You are faithful by Your very nature.

Hold me steady. Your kindness is bigger than all my mistakes.

You will stumble; grace is faithful anyway.
The deeper layer

rahio achayt na chaytio gobind — remaining heedless, not remembering; birthaa a-oDh siraanee — life passing empty; har birad pachhaanao, bhoolay sadaa paraanee — O Lord, live up to Your own faithful nature; this being always errs. Birad again: the One's built-in faithfulness that rescues the one who keeps slipping. The Mehl 9 pattern — honest about human forgetfulness, resolved in trust, not fear. This closes the shabad.

A Question to Sit With

When you make the same mistake again, what would it feel like to be met with kindness instead of blame?
