The Jewel of the Name, Set Down and Forgotten

ਰਾਮ ਭਜਨ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਾਥਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ॥
raam bhajan kee gat nahee jaanee maa-i-aa haath bikaanaa.
You do not know the Way of the Lord's meditation; you have sold yourself into Maya's hands.
ਉਰਝਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਖਿਅਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਉਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
urajh rahi-o bikhi-an sang ba-uraa naam ratan bisraanaa. ||2||
The madman remains entangled in vice and corruption; he has forgotten the jewel of the Naam. ||2||

In plain words

I have not really learned the quiet art of remembering the One, and so I have handed myself over to the endless wanting of things.

Tangled up in what pulls me this way and that, I set down a treasure and forgot I was even holding it.

That treasure is the Name, the living presence of the One. It is still here. I only have to pick it up again.

The most precious thing is already yours; remembering is picking it back up.
The deeper layer

raam bhajan kee gat nahee jaanee — the way of remembrance not known; maa-i-aa haath bikaanaa — sold into Maya's hand; naam ratan bisraanaa — the jewel of the Naam forgotten. Naam here is the priceless thing set down amid distraction; the remedy is simply to remember. Bauraa ('madman') softened; entanglement is a confusion to wake from, not a sin to punish.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable you sometimes forget you already have?
