Verse 2 of 4

Trading the Real for the Passing

ਸਾਚ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਝੂਠਹ ਲਾਗਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਓ ॥
saach chhaad kai jhoothah laagi-o janam akaarath kho-i-o.
Abandoning Truth, you cling to falsehood; your life is uselessly wasting away.
ਕਰਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਉਦਰ ਨਿਜ ਪੋਖਿਓ ਪਸੁ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਸੋਇਓ ॥੧॥
kar parpanch udar nij pokhi-o pas kee ni-aa-ee so-i-o. ||1||
Practicing hypocrisy, you fill your belly, and then sleep like an animal. ||1||

In plain words

When I let go of what is real and grab hold of what only pretends to be real, my precious days slip through my fingers.

It is easy to just fill my stomach, coast along half-asleep, and never wake up to what my life is for.

But I do not have to live that way. I can wake up. I can choose the real.

A life spent only feeding the body sleeps through its real purpose.
The deeper layer

saach chhaad kai jhoothah laagio — abandoning truth, clinging to the false; janam akaarath — the human birth spent in vain; pas kee niaa-ee soio — sleeping like an animal, living only for appetite, unaware. Rendered gently: the call is to wake up, not a condemnation. Sach (the real) versus jhooth (the passing) runs under the whole shabad.

A Question to Sit With

What is something real you would like to wake up to more often?
