Verse 4 of 4

At the Last, Only the Dear One Stays

ih biDh ko bi-uhaar bani-o hai jaa si-o nayhu lagaa-i-o.
This is the way they act - those whom we love so much.
ant baar naanak bin har jee ko-oo kaam na aa-i-o. ||3||12||139||
At the very last moment, O Nanak, no one is any use at all, except the Dear Lord. ||3||12||139||

In plain words

This is simply how it goes, even with the people we love the most, their care has an edge, a limit.

And so, gently: at the very last, the One who stays close is the Dear One, the love woven into everything.

Keep that Friend near now, and there will be no last moment when you are alone.

Keep the One close now, and you are never truly alone, not even at the end.
The deeper layer

ih biDh ko bi-uhaar banio hai — this is the way of things; ant baar... bin har jee ko-oo kaam na aa-io — at the final hour none avails but the Dear One. The last line of the whole Mehl 9 Sorath block: a calm, trusting close. Not fear of death but reassurance — the One is the companion who never reaches a limit.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to carry a friendship that nothing can take away?
