Verse 3 of 8

When the Windy Mind Rests, the Name Tastes Sweet

manoo-aa pa-un bind sukhvaasee naam vasai sukh bhaa-ee.
The mind is like the wind, but if it comes to rest in peace, even for an instant, then he shall abide in the peace of the Name, O Siblings of Destiny.
jihbaa naytar sotar sach raatay jal boojhee tujheh bujhaa-ee.
His tongue, eyes and ears are imbued with Truth; O Lord, You quench the fires of desire.
aas niraas rahai bairaagee nij ghar taarhee laa-ee.
In hope, the renunciate remains free of hopes; in the home of his own inner self, he is absorbed in the trance of deep meditation.
bhikhi-aa naam rajay santokhee amrit sahj pee-aa-ee. ||3||
He remains content, satisfied with the charity of the Naam; he drinks in the Ambrosial Amrit with ease. ||3||

In plain words

My mind can be as restless as the wind, blowing every which way, but let it settle, even for one quiet breath, and the peace of the Name moves in.

Then what I say, what I see, what I hear all get colored by what is real, and the burning of endless wanting cools right down.

Living simply on the gift of the Name, content, I drink something sweet and calming, easily, like water.

Even one quiet breath can let the peace of the Name settle in.
The deeper layer

manoo-aa pa-un — the mind like wind; bind sukhvaasee — resting even a moment; jal boojhee — the fire of trisna (craving) is quenched. aas niraas rahai — living among hopes yet free of them; nij ghar taarhee — a trance in one's own inner home; bhikhiaa naam — the Name as alms, the renunciate's true food; amrit sahj peeaa-ee — drinking amrit with natural ease. The stilled mind is the condition for tasting the Name.

A Question to Sit With

When does your busy mind get a chance to rest, even for a moment?
