Ropes of Ritual and Wanting — the Name Sets Free

sorath mehlaa 1 titukee.
Sorat'h, First Mehl, Ti-Tukas:
aasaa mansaa banDhnee bhaa-ee karam Dharam banDhkaaree.
Hope and desire are entrapments, O Siblings of Destiny. Religious rituals and ceremonies are traps.
paap punn jag jaa-i-aa bhaa-ee binsai naam visaaree.
Because of good and bad deeds, one is born into the world, O Siblings of Destiny; forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he is ruined.
ih maa-i-aa jag mohnee bhaa-ee karam sabhay vaykaaree. ||1||
This Maya is the enticer of the world, O Siblings of Destiny; all such actions are corrupt. ||1||

In plain words

Endless wanting can wrap around you like a rope, and even holy-looking routines can become just another rope if the heart is not in them.

What ties us up is not the outside stuff; it is forgetting the living presence of the One while we go through the motions.

The shine of the world pulls hard. But the Name gently loosens every knot.

It is not the ritual that binds you; it is doing it while forgetting the One.
The deeper layer

aasaa mansaa banDhnee — hope and desire are bonds; karam Dharam banDhkaaree — even rites and religious duties can bind when hollow. binsai naam visaaree — the loss is forgetting the Naam, not the acts themselves. maa-i-aa jag mohnee — Maya the enchanter. The critique targets empty formalism across all traditions, evenhandedly; the remedy is remembrance, framed positively.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between doing something out of love and just going through the motions?
