The One Practice Worth Doing Grows Peace Inside

sun pandit karmaa kaaree.
Listen, O ritualistic Pandit:
jit karam sukh oopjai bhaa-ee so aatam tat beechaaree. rahaa-o.
that religious ritual which produces happiness, O Siblings of Destiny, is contemplation of the essence of the soul. ||Pause||
saasat bayd bakai kharho bhaa-ee karam karahu sansaaree.
You may stand and recite the Shaastras and the Vedas, O Siblings of Destiny, but these are just worldly actions.
pakhand mail na chook-ee bhaa-ee antar mail vikaaree.
Filth cannot be washed away by hypocrisy, O Siblings of Destiny; the filth of corruption and sin is within you.
in biDh doobee maakuree bhaa-ee ooNdee sir kai bhaaree. ||2||
This is how the spider is destroyed, O Siblings of Destiny, by falling head-long in its own web. ||2||

In plain words

Here is the practice actually worth doing: the quiet one that grows real peace inside you, where you look gently into your own soul.

You can recite every holy book out loud and perfectly, but if it stays only on the lips, it is just motion; the cloudiness inside does not clear by putting on a show.

Pretending is a trap you weave for yourself, like a spider getting tangled in its own web. Better to be simply, honestly real.

The practice that heals is the honest look inside, not the perfect performance.
The deeper layer

sun pandit karmaa kaaree — addressed to the ritual-performing Pandit; the Rahau: jit karam sukh oopjai... so aatam tat beechaaree — the true 'ritual' is contemplation of the soul's essence. pakhand mail na chook-ee — hypocrisy does not cleanse; the mail (not-cleanness) is inner. maakuree — the spider tangled in its own web, a gentle image of self-made traps. The critique is of formalism, not of the Pandit as a person or of scripture itself.

A Question to Sit With

What is one honest thing you could look at inside yourself today?
