Verse 3 of 8

Doubt Doesn't Leave Until the Guide Arrives

durmat ghanee vigootee bhaa-ee doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ee.
So many are destroyed by their own evil-mindedness, O Siblings of Destiny; in the love of duality, they are ruined.
bin satgur naam na paa-ee-ai bhaa-ee bin naamai bharam na jaa-ee.
Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Name, doubt does not depart.
satgur sayvay taa sukh paa-ay bhaa-ee aavan jaan rahaa-ee. ||3||
If one serves the True Guru, then he obtains peace, O Siblings of Destiny; his comings and goings are ended. ||3||

In plain words

When my thinking gets tangled and I split my heart between too many masters, I end up lost and unhappy.

Doubt is stubborn, it does not just talk itself away. It quiets when the Name settles into the heart, and the Name comes through a true guide.

Walk with that guide, and a deep restlessness finally stills; the endless coming-and-going settles into peace.

Doubt does not argue itself away; it quiets when the Name settles in.
The deeper layer

durmat... vigootee — spoiled by tangled thinking; doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ee — ruined by love of duality. bin satgur naam na paa-ee-ai — without the Guru the Name is not found; bin naamai bharam na jaa-ee — without the Name doubt stays. aavan jaan rahaa-ee — the wandering ends, rendered as inner restlessness settling.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your worries settle when your mind will not stop spinning?
