Praise the Praiseworthy — Good Company Churns the Essence

saalaahee salaahnaa pi-aaray doojaa avar na ko-ay.
I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, O Beloved; there is no other one to praise.
mayray parabh saalaahan say bhalay pi-aaray sabad ratay rang ho-ay.
Those who praise my God are good, O Beloved; they are imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and His Love.
tis kee sangat jay milai pi-aaray ras lai tat vilo-ay. ||2||
If I join them, O Beloved, I can churn the essence and so find joy. ||2||

In plain words

I sing to the One truly worth singing to, there is really no other like that One.

The people who love the One are good company to keep; the Word and its love have soaked right into them.

Sit with them, and together you churn up the sweet essence of things, and joy rises to the top.

Keep company with those who love the One, and joy rises like cream to the top.
The deeper layer

Praise the One who is truly worth praising, and sit with people who love that One.

Saalaahee salaahnaa — "I praise the Praiseworthy." Doojaa avar na ko-ay — there is no other like that One.

The people who praise the One are good to be around. Sabad ratay rang ho-ay — they are soaked in the Shabad, the Guru's Word, and dyed in its love, like a white shirt dipped in bright color.

Then comes the gift of sangat, good company. Ras lai tat vilo-ay — sitting with them, you churn out the essence and taste the joy. Think of making butter by churning milk. You keep stirring, and the richest part rises to the top. Good company works like that. Together, the best part of things comes up, and joy rises with it.

A Question to Sit With

How do the people around you change what rises to the top in you?
