When I live from my small separate 'me,' always keeping score, I get tangled and heavy inside.
Forgetting the flow, I can wander in circles, feeling stuck and sorry.
But the moment I truly recognize how life works and lean into it, Truth and a quiet honor come and find me.
Keeping score with a small, separate "me" makes us heavy, but seeing how life really works brings truth and honor.
Hukmay ganat ganaa-ee-ai — some get caught up in counting and keeping accounts. Hukmay ha-umai do-ay — some are caught in ha-umai and do-ay. Ha-umai is ego, the "me first" voice that keeps score. Do-ay means "two-ness," feeling split off from the One and from everyone else. Gurbani, the Gurus' words, treats ha-umai as a sickness that can be healed.
Hukmay bhavai bhavaa-ee-ai — we wander round and round. Avgan muthee ro-ay — cheated by our own faults, we cry out, feeling stuck. Think of a phone game you can't stop playing because you always want a higher score. You end up tired, not happy.
Then comes the way out. Hukam sinjaapai saah kaa — recognize the Command of the true King, the flow of existence. Sach milai vadi-aa-ee ho-ay — then Truth and honor come and find you.
What happens inside you when you stop keeping score of who owes what?
