Verse 8 of 9

Hard to Speak the True Name — Blessed the Ones Who Sing It

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
aakhan a-ukhaa aakhee-ai pi-aaray ki-o sunee-ai sach naa-o.
It is so difficult to speak it, O Beloved; how can we speak, and hear, the True Name?
jinHee so salaahi-aa pi-aaray ha-o tinH balihaarai jaa-o.
I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord, O Beloved.
ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੭॥
naa-o milai santokhee-aaN pi-aaray nadree mayl milaa-o. ||7||
I have obtained the Name, and I am satisfied, O Beloved; by His Grace, I am united in His Union. ||7||

In plain words

The True Name is almost too big for words, how do you say it, how do you even hear it fully?

So I bow with all my heart to the ones who sing it well; I would give anything to learn from them.

And when the Name finally settles in me, a deep contentment arrives, grace itself draws me home into the Oneness.

The Name is bigger than words; grace, not effort, brings you home to it.
The deeper layer

The True Name is almost too big for words, yet grace brings it home to us.

Aakhan a-ukhaa aakhee-ai — it is very hard to say. Ki-o sunee-ai sach naa-o — how can we even hear the True Name fully? Guru Nanak comes back to this idea often. The One is bigger than any words can carry.

So he bows to those who sing it well. Ha-o tin balihaarai jaa-o — "I would give myself for them." To be balihaar is to love and honor someone so much you would give anything for them. It is like the way you look up to an older cousin who plays music beautifully.

Naa-o milai santokhee-aa — when the Name is found, a deep contentment, santokh, arrives. Nadree mayl milaa-o — by grace, nadar, we are brought into union with the One. We don't pull ourselves there. Grace draws us home.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone you would love to learn something beautiful from?
