Verse 5 of 8

Natural Ease Doesn't Grow Without the Guide

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur bin sahj na oopjai bhaa-ee poochhahu gi-aanee-aa jaa-ay.
Without the Guru, celestial peace is not produced, O Siblings of Destiny; go and ask the spiritual teachers about this.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੫॥
satgur kee sayvaa sadaa kar bhaa-ee vichahu aap gavaa-ay. ||5||
Serve the True Guru forever, O Siblings of Destiny, and eradicate self-conceit from within. ||5||

In plain words

That deep, easy peace does not just sprout on its own, ask anyone wise and they will tell you the same.

It grows when you walk with a real guide.

Keep at it, gently and steadily, and let your puffed-up 'me' melt away in the process.

Deep peace grows with a guide, as the puffed-up 'me' melts away.
The deeper layer

gur bin sahj na oopjai — without the Guru, sahaj does not arise; poochhahu giaanee-aa jaa-ay — go ask the wise. satgur kee sayvaa sadaa kar... vichahu aap gavaa-ay — serve always, erasing self-conceit (aap). Sahaj as the fruit of the teaching, plus ego-dissolving.

A Question to Sit With

What is a calm, steady feeling that grows when you practice it a little each day?
